Established in the 2023-24 school year, the year-long Big CAT Mentorship Program partners freshman students with 1-2 upperclassman leaders (mentors), creating their Big CAT “family” for the year. Big CAT families meet monthly and engage in various activities including ice breakers, academic support resources, goal setting and more.
The goal of the Big CAT Mentorship program is to help freshmen successfully navigate their first year at Marin Catholic, socially, academically and spiritually. Through this program, students connect with each other on a deep level and work to understand each other’s struggles, lean on each other for support, and truly caring about their wellbeing and connection to the MC community.
Each meeting has a theme that is explored. Past themes have included:
balancing high school life: academics/athletics/ social life
goal setting: personal, spiritual and academic
faith life - learning to pray together and know Jesus
having time for fellowship, socializing and game playing
Each Big CAT mentor goes through an application and interview process. They attend mandatory training days to learn what it means to be a mentor. We have a select group of Juniors and Seniors who make up an Executive Big CAT Team who mentor and train the Big CATS, setting the example of what it means to mentor and build friendships with their Freshmen. The program is designed to empower and build trust and unity across the various classes.
The program was born from a need to come alongside our freshmen and help support them to find a home on our campus. When we rolled out the program to our student body in the 2022-23 school year, we had 100 applicants, which resulted in 67 Big CATS and an Executive team of 10 juniors and seniors. Right from the start these Executive and Big CATS grabbed a hold of this opportunity to bring more love onto our campus and they haven’t looked back!
