Your Summer Adventure Starts Here:
Marin Catholic High School offers a comprehensive Summer School Program. Summer offerings include enrichment classes and workshops for middle and high school students, as well as for parents; high school credit classes; and preparation classes.
Summer School Program Information:
- Calendar: Unless otherwise specified with the course description below, classes will meet from June 16 through July 16, Monday through Friday (note that no classes will be held on July 2, in observance of Independence Day). In High School Credit Classes, students who miss more than three classes will incur a loss of credit for that class. Tuition is non-refundable in such cases.
- Meeting Times: Unless otherwise specified in the course description below, classes could meet in either of two periods: 8:00 – 10:30 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. Meeting times are determined based on enrollment and other factors, and will mailed to families approximately ten days prior to the start of Summer School.
- Registration dates: A $50.00, non-refundable reservation fee per class, for all classes, must be received by May
21, 2010. The balance of the tuition must be received by June 4, 2010.
- Cost: The cost of all classes is specified with the course descriptions
below.
- Holiday: No classes will be held on Friday, July 2, in observation of Independence Day
- Minimum Enrollment: With the exception of preparation classes, all enrichment and high school credit classes and workshops are subject to minimum enrollment and facility constraints. Families will be informed by June 4, 2010 if a class or workshop will not be offered for these, or any other, reasons.
- Non-Marin Catholic Students welcome: Unless otherwise specified with the course description below, and based on space available, enrollment in the Summer School Program is open to students from both private and public schools.
Types of courses are offered:
- Preparation Classes: These are non-credit courses for incoming high school freshman designed to prepare students for entry-level high school curricula in English and mathematics.
- Enrichment Classes and Workshops: These are non-credit courses for middle- and high school students and parents. These courses are designed to provide stimulating and creative experiences for students and parents who have an interest in exploring subjects and developing skills outside of traditional curriculum offerings.
- High School Credit Classes: These are high school credit classes intended primarily for students who wish or need to remediate a previously earned grade, or who need or wish to satisfy a prerequisite subsequent advanced course work.

Preparation Classes
Course: Math 9 Prep
Open to: Only incoming Marin Catholic freshmen recommended or required to take
this course
Dates: June 16 – July 16
Cost: $400.00
Description: This course is open to incoming freshmen who are required or
recommended to enroll in Marin Catholic's Summer School math program. Math 9
Prep is designed to help prepare students for enrollment in Algebra I. This
course emphasizes arithmetic and fundamental pre-algebra skills.
Course: English 9 Prep
Open to: Only incoming Marin Catholic freshmen recommended or required to take
this course
Dates: June 16 – July 16
Cost: $400.00
Description: This course is open to incoming freshmen who are recommended or
required to enroll in Marin Catholic’s Summer School English program. English 9
Prep is designed to help prepare students for the demands of a college preparatory
high school English course. The course will emphasize spelling, vocabulary,
grammar, writing skills, and reading comprehension.
Enrichment Classes & Workshops
Course: Tom Lippi’s Book Club for Parents and Friends
Open to: Anyone interested (limited space available)
Dates: June 21 – June 23
Times: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Cost: $150.00
Description: This has always been the most popular and asked about class in the
Marin Catholic Summer Program. This three-night course allows parents, friends,
and interested students a chance to be taught by Marin Catholic's Master
English Teacher, Tom Lippi. Participants
will read Mariette in Ecstasy by Ron Hansen beforehand and have an assignment prior to the first night of
class. At Back-to-School Night, parents who have children in Mr. Lippi's class
always leave wishing they could take a course from him. Well here's your chance!
For incoming parents, there is no better introduction to Marin Catholic. As

Course: Weird Science!
Open to: Incoming freshman students, but beneficial for any student wishing to expand
their science skills
Dates: June 16 – July 16 (Mondays through Thursdays)
Meeting Times: 10:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
Cost: $400.00
Description: What is the scientific method? What does that look like in practice?
How does a scientist think about things? How can I be a better scientist or
science student? All of these questions, and more, will be answered this
summer! As we explore a range of scientific topics you will learn how to make
observations, take accurate measurements, interpret graphs, use critical
thinking skills, read a scientific text, and design an experiment. Topics
include, but are not limited to, field ecology, laws of motion, chemical
reactions, and marine biology.
Course: Abbracciamo L’Italia! (Embracing Italy: A One Week Italian Immersion
Course)
Open to: Students entering 6th – 8th grades
Dates: July 12 – July 16
Meeting Times: 8:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Cost: $100.00
Description: Abbracciamo l'Italia is a one week journey that will introduce the
participants to Il Bel Paese, immersing them in Italy's way of life, through
hands-on activities. Students will make a Carnevale mask, race in the Palio for
their Sienese Contrada, learn Scopa and Bocce Ball, and prepare sumptuous
spuntini. The beginning language topics of numbers, colors, introductions,
foods, and recipes are presented. Bring your love of adventure and your
openness to experience a new culture for a great week of learning and
divertimento (fun). A presto!
Course: Summer Boredom Survival Guide: A Digital Workshop for Middle Schoolers
Open to: Students entering 6th through 8th grades
Dates: June 14 – June 18
Meeting Times: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Cost: $165.00
Description: Lights, camera, action! This digital workshop will teach your young director and/or photojournalist a thing or two about digital photos, layout and videography. Over a one week time period, your child will learn the basics on making their own short movie and how to create a publication, using Photoshop and InDesign. The workshop teaches all the skills necessary to document their summer vacation and keep them from uttering that familiar refrain—“I’m bored!”
Course: Photojournalism
Open to: Incoming 9th -12th grade students
Dates: June 21 – June 25
Meeting Times: 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $165.00
Description: This course introduces all the elements of visual communication. Students learn the basics of digital photography and page layout. Organization, printing techniques, and layout are covered, as well as an introduction to skills in Photoshop and InDesign. The week is geared towards students with an interest in being part of Emcee Echoes, the yearbook staff or publications in general.
Course: Adventures in Clay
Open to: 5th, 6th,
7th, and 8th graders (space is limited)
Dates: June 14 – June 25
Meeting Times: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Description: This course is an
introduction into the exciting medium of clay! We will explore all types of construction methods including
the pinch, coil, and slab techniques. Students will also learn to use the potter’s wheel and be introduced to
throwing forms on the wheel. Students will create multiple projects, both functional and sculptural,
that they will be able to take home at the end of the course. All levels are welcome and encouraged
to sign up!
Course: Explorations in Clay
Open to: Parents, students, and anyone
in the community with an interest (space is limited)
Dates: June 16 – July 14
(Wednesday evenings only)

Open Studio on Saturdays
from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (6/19, 6/26, & 7/10)
Cost: $500
Description: This course
is designed to give parents and adults in the community a chance to experience
the exciting medium of clay! All
levels are welcome and encouraged to sign up. Whether it will be your first time working with clay or if
you are a seasoned veteran with the material, Mister J will work with each
student individually to learn and grow as a ceramic artist. This is your chance to be Mister J’s
ceramics student! Space is limited, so don’t hesitate, go for it!
High School Credit Classes
Course: English 9
Open to: Students making up a D or F grade in English 9
Dates: June 16 – July 16
Cost: $400.00
Credit: 5 units
Description: The goal of English 9 is to help students become skilled readers and
effective writers. The course emphasizes the study of great writing from
classical to contemporary times. Students learn the critical skills necessary
to understand and interpret works of literature of various types: long and
short fiction, the novel, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and the epic. The
structure of English grammar and composition and extensive vocabulary study are
fundamental aspects of the course. The writing program focuses on developing
responses to literature and includes practice in autobiographical, narrative,
descriptive, and expository writing.
Course: English 10
Open to: Students making up a D or F grade in English 10
Dates: June 16 – July 16
Cost: $400.00
Credit: 5 units
Description: The goal of English 10 is to investigate the various types of literature
(poetry, prose, drama) and to explore how they address certain timeless themes
in literature: the journey of the hero, coming of age, war and peace, love,
etc. The structure of English grammar and composition and extensive vocabulary
study remain essential aspects of the course, with increased emphasis on
grammar for writing and the development of a more sophisticated and varied
style. Expository writing receives greater emphasis, the focus for assignments
moving generally from response to analysis. Practice continues in the
development of skills in autobiographical, narrative, and expressive writing.
Course: Computer Literacy
Open to: High school students
Dates: June 16 – July 16
Meeting Times: 10:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
Cost: $400.00
Credit: 5 units
Description: This course provides an introduction to the most commonly-used computer
applications. Students will learn the fundamentals of word processing, mail
merge, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and databases. Applications used will be MS
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Appleworks. This one-semester credit course
satisfies Marin Catholic’s Computer Literacy graduation requirement.
Course: Health and Fitness
Open to: High school students
Dates: June 16 – July 16
Meeting Times: 8:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Cost: $400.00
Credit: 5 units
Description: This course features an extensive program of health and physical
activities, exposing the student to a variety of health issues, and group and
individual sports. Students are also expected to pass an independent study
First Aid Course. This one-semester credit course satisfies Marin Catholic’s
Physical Education graduation requirement.
Course: Advanced Clay Studio
Open to: Students who have successfully completed Art 1 or Ceramics 1 (space is limited)
Dates: June 21 – July 16
Meeting Times: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Open Studio on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (6/19, 6/26, & 7/10)
Cost: $800
Credit: 5 units
Description: This course is a very unique opportunity for students to further their progress and development as young ceramic artists. Basic building techniques will be covered in addition to more advanced techniques and demonstrations. Students will have the opportunity to create figurative sculpture as well as create symmetrical forms on the potter’s wheel. This course will be a college level studio art class with the primary focus on making unique and creative works of art. In addition to the M-F class time students will also have the opportunity to come on Saturday mornings to work on their projects.
