Christian Service

Living Out Our Christian Values

An integral part of the educational experience at Marin Catholic College Preparatory is the 100-hour service component which has students live out the school mission of Faith, Knowledge, and Service in their community.  Our Christian service learning as an educational concept combines students doing volunteer service in the community with reflection and classroom connections in order to deepen understanding.  As a school, we want students to reflect on their service, to gain understanding about people’s lives and witness how our society does or doesn’t take care of its most vulnerable members.  The focus is on social justice and Catholic Social Teaching and the responsibility each of us has to the greater world around us while living out the gospel values.

Throughout the four years, you will serve as Christ's hands to the larger community in need. Please read on for the expectations of your service over each of your years at Marin Catholic.

Freshman Year

The freshmen project connects to the freshmen Theology curriculum highlighting family life and the six actions of Christ (corporal works of mercy).  Students will look at the roles within their families, complete part of the project with a family member (parent, grandparent, sibling…) while serving in one of the local elderly centers or working with the marginalized.  A written assignment about the experience will be turned into their Theology classes and may take a variety of forms.

To be clear, you will be completing 15 hours total your Freshman year (including 5 of the 15 with one or both of your parents), as follows:
  • 5 serving the elderly
  • 5 serving the marginalized
  • 5 select either to work again with the elderly or the marginalized

C. Class learning, assignments, and reflections.

 1. Living out our faith through service to people in need is a recurrent theme for Theology 10. The Bible lays a foundation for WHY we serve the needy. We will make frequent connections between what we study in Scripture and what you are doing in your own Christian service.

 2. Several class periods have been allotted to a special focus on understanding why we do Christian service as part of our faith journey. Each of these focused discussions has specific assignments and reflections; most of them are contained in this workbook.

D. Evaluation of Christian Service.
1. As explained in the Course Expectations for Theology 10, the Christian Service component (workbook and other class assignments, and reflections) is worth 10% of each semester grade.

 2. Workbook and other assignments and reflections: You must complete all assignments thoughtfully and on time to earn full credit for this portion of your semester grade.

 3. NOTE: Your ability to complete the assignments for this portion of your semester grade SUCCESSFULLY is closely tied to the experience you gain from completing your required Christian service hours and meeting the deadlines. You must complete your hours to do well on these assignments.
