The Boosters Guest Speaker Program is designed to provide MC parents insights across a variety of sports.
The Boosters Club had guest speaker Mike Firenzi on February
19.
Growing up in Marin County,
Marin CatholicHead Baseball Coach Mike Firenzi played baseball and graduated in 1983 from Redwood High School. He came to Marin Catholic baseball as an assistant
coach and took over the head coach position in 1990.
Opening his 18th
season this year Coach Firenzi says MC is a great place to coach. He loves being around his players. He truly admires
their camaraderie which often continues past high school. Some of his players keep
in contact with each other into their adult lives.
Coach Firenzi
appreciates all the support he receives from the Athletic Department and says
that our MC baseball field is one of the greatest facilities in Northern California.
Overseeing the
entire baseball program, Coach Firenzi has two Freshman Coaches, three JV
Coaches and four Varsity Coaches. He attempts
to spend time with each level but game schedules make it difficult. Non league games begin this week and league
play opens March 4.
Reflecting, Coach
Firenzi said, for him coaching is not just about baseball. He tries to teach
his players to have even temperaments in reaction to events on the field. He asks his players to look a person in the
eye and to be respectful. Firenzi refers
to himself as an “old school” coach, believing in shining your cleats and
hustling on and off the ball field.
When asked about
the decision to move to a higher playoff bracket, Coach Firenzi believes, “If
we are good, we should play the best.” Preferring to play up he said, “If I have a good pitcher on the mound,
I’ll play anyone in the country.”
